Michelle Hinckley is a wife and mother of three young boys. Her husband started a blog a few years ago to keep family and friends updated on the events in their life. At that time Michelle didn’t even know what a blog was. After some time of seeing what he was doing Michelle renamed the blog www.4men1lady.com and started posting their home projects, which have since been featured throughout the blogosphere, in various magazines, and on the Nate Berkus Show. Michelle describes her home as “constantly loud, rowdy, rough and tough”. Michelle blogs about their life and her attempt at bringing beauty to a house full of men. Follow Michelle on Facebook and Pinterest, and of course visit her blog and say hello!
What was the first thing that made you smile today? My son told me I looked pretty.
Who is a mama that inspires you? (Living or dead, real or fictional) I am so inspired by Oprah. Oprah never had children but she was sort of a mother figure to the nation. She always taught people to live their best life and that’s what I strive to do daily.
What is the one extravagance you view as a necessity? Laser hair removal!
What is the one household task you try to avoid at all costs? Cooking dinner.
How do you shortcut dealing with this unavoidable task? Wait until 5 minutes before dinner time, panic then eat out.
Which talent would you most like to have? I day dream about being a really good singer.
What is your favorite thing to do with three hours to yourself? I love going to Barnes and Noble, collecting 20 home décor magazines, then reading them in a cushy chair. I also LOVE to clean. When you have three boys constantly underfoot your house can get quite messy. Once in a while my husband will take all the boys out, I blast the music and clean all by myself.
What day-to-day achievement gives you renewed energy and enthusiasm? Taking a shower, putting on make up and wearing my hair down. Believe it or not, it’s quite a huge achievement.
What is your favorite occupation? Motherhood.
What family tradition do you look forward to most? Dinnertime. Even though I wrote cooking is a chore, I look forward to sitting around the dinner table and talking with my family.
What is your most favorite holiday? 4th of July. I love backyard bbq, kids running around barefoot, warm temps.
What is one thing you say to your kids that your mama never said? “Quit hitting your brother”! (I was an only child).
What was the funniest thing your kid did or said yesterday? My two boys were attempting to play volleyball game in the back yard. My 4 year old threw the ball up in the air and said “servants” instead of “service”.
Who can you count on most when you need help? My parents.
Where in the world would you most like to spend a week with your family? Hawaii.
What is your motto? Take risks.
Who would star in the movie of your life? You mean who would play the leading role? Jessica Alba.
What do you love most about being a mom? I could never have experienced the amount of love I feel for my boys. I love comforting them when they get a “ouchie” and get their feelings hurt. I feel like it is my ultimate calling. It is trying as all get out. It makes me answer my higher calling daily.
What do you and your partner do to reconnect? Pillow talk. Our best conversations are after we go to bed and re-cap the day for 10 minutes.
What is the single most brilliant invention (gadget, product) that makes your life as a mama easier? Sanitizing wipes. I use them everywhere. Toilet, dinner table, floor, door knobs, everywhere!
What is the one strategy that keeps your family moving right along on a day-to-day basis? I have to stay on top of clutter. I make sure I get up and first thing empty the dishwasher so it’s ready to be re-filled throughout the day. I have a “no dishes in the sink” policy so mess and clutter doesn’t collect in the kitchen. Kids have their own hooks for jackets, backpacks, and bathroom towels. Nothing puts a kink in the day like not being able to find things because the house is a mess and clutter is everywhere.
